How to tell if
smart glasses
are recording.
The short version: every major pair has an indicator light, it is the manufacturer's intended answer to this question, and in a real room it is far easier to miss than the designers imagined.
Below is what the light actually does, the three situations where it does not help, and what else you can go on.
What the light
is for.
Camera glasses from Meta, Snap and Amazon all light an LED on the outside of the frame while capturing. It is a deliberate design decision, not an accident of the electronics: the people around you are not the customer, and the light exists so they are not filmed unknowingly.

Three ways
you miss it.
You have to be looking at their face
The indicator is a few millimetres across and sits on the front of the frame. It works if you happen to be looking directly at someone from the front, at conversational distance, in reasonable light. Across a bar, on a train, from behind, or in bright sun, a small LED is simply not visible. Most of the situations people actually worry about are exactly these.
You have to know to look
Modern camera glasses look like ordinary eyewear — that is the product. If you do not already suspect the frames in front of you contain a camera, you have no reason to check a spot on them for a light. The indicator only helps someone who is already asking the question.
It can be obscured
Researchers and journalists have demonstrated that the indicator can be covered, and manufacturers prohibit it in their terms of use. We are not going to explain how, and it is worth keeping in proportion: this takes deliberate effort and is not what most wearers are doing. But a privacy protection that depends on the goodwill of the person wearing it is a different kind of protection from one that does not.
What else
gives them away.
The frames themselves
Camera glasses are thicker at the hinges than ordinary frames, because that is where the battery and electronics live. Most have a visible lens aperture on one or both outer corners. Once you have noticed the shape a few times it becomes hard to un-see.
The pause
Capture is usually triggered by a button on the temple or a spoken command. A hand moving to the side of the frame, or a half-second of stillness with the head squared to something, is a more visible tell than the light.
Wearing them indoors
Not evidence of anything on its own — plenty of people keep sunglasses on. But indoor sunglasses plus thick hinges plus a lens aperture is a combination worth a second look.
The radio
Camera glasses keep a Bluetooth link to a phone, and they broadcast while doing it. That signal travels through a bag, around a corner and behind you — everywhere a small light does not. It is what detection apps listen for.
What nothing
can tell you.
No method available to a bystander — the light, the shape, the radio, any app including ours — can tell you whether a recording is being kept, uploaded, or was ever started. You can learn that a camera is present and sometimes that it is active. That is the whole of it.
Anyone selling you more certainty than that is selling you something. A tool that overstates its own power in a situation like this is not neutral — it makes you confident at exactly the moment you should stay alert.
