Can smart
glasses be
detected?
Often, yes — not by seeing them, but by listening for the radio signal they broadcast to stay connected to a phone. It works through bags, around corners and behind you, where a small indicator light cannot.
It is also not a guarantee, and the reasons why are more interesting than the reasons it works.
What glasses
broadcast.
Camera glasses are Bluetooth Low Energy devices. To be found and stay paired, they transmit small packets called advertisements — a few dozen bytes, several times a second, to anything in range that cares to listen. Listening is passive. Nothing is sent to the glasses, and the wearer is not notified.
| Manufacturer identifier | A number assigned by the Bluetooth SIG to the company that made the device. Meta, Snap and Amazon each have theirs. This is the strongest single clue, and also the one most easily shared with unrelated products from the same manufacturer. |

When they're
loudest.
This is the part most detection tools do not tell you, and it matters more than any other single fact about how well one works.
Powering on and leaving the case
A device that is not yet connected advertises loudly and often, because it is trying to be found. This is the easiest moment to detect by a wide margin.
Pairing and reconnecting
Walking back into range of a paired phone produces the same burst of activity. Someone arriving in a room is often detectable at the moment they arrive.
Connected and idle — the hard case
Once a link is established, a device has far less reason to shout. Some keep advertising; some go quiet for long stretches. A pair that has been sitting on someone's face, connected, for an hour may be genuinely inaudible. This is the honest limitation of every Bluetooth detector, including ours, and anyone who does not mention it is not being straight with you.
What a detection
actually means.
Not everything that matches is glasses, and treating every match as certain is how detectors become useless. LensSentry separates the two cases rather than flattening them into one alarm.
Possible
Something matching a manufacturer identifier is nearby, but nothing identified it as a specific device. Plenty of unrelated hardware shares these identifiers — VR headsets in particular, which is why known lookalikes are excluded outright rather than reported as glasses.
Likely
Several characteristics line up against a known signature. This is a recognised device, not a guess from one number.
What neither means
That anyone is recording. A detection means a matching radio signal is in range — nothing about whether a camera is on, pointed at you, or capturing anything at all.
Why quiet is not safety
A clear screen means nothing matching was heard in that moment. Given the idle case above, that is a weaker statement than it sounds, and it should never be read as "no cameras here".
Why this has to
keep updating.
Manufacturers change what their devices broadcast — new models, new firmware, occasionally deliberate changes. A detection library written once and left alone gets quieter over time without ever announcing that it has, which is the worst possible failure for a tool like this: it keeps saying "all clear" while seeing less and less.
