Do hidden camera
detector apps
actually work?

Mostly less than they claim. We make a detection app ourselves, which is exactly why we'd rather you know what the hardware in your phone can genuinely hear — and what no app, ours included, can promise.

The short version: an app can only detect what a camera gives off. Cameras that emit something — a radio signal, an infrared glow — are findable. Cameras that emit nothing are not, by any app, at any price.

Lens-glint scans The apps that sweep your camera around the room looking for lens reflections test poorly: one investigative review put success rates at 12–34% even when conditions favored the app. They demand a slow, steady scan at the right angle and distance — a hotel-room walkthrough at normal speed finds very little.
Infrared spotting Your phone's front camera can sometimes see the IR glow of a night-vision camera in a dark room, as bright dots on screen. Real, but narrow: it only works in darkness, only on IR-equipped cameras, and only while they're illuminating.
Network scans The genuinely useful one. A camera streaming over the room's Wi-Fi is a device on the network, and network scanners list it. Reviewers consistently rate this the most reliable app-based method — for the subset of cameras that use the network at all.
Bluetooth scans Devices that maintain a Bluetooth link — trackers, some cameras, and camera glasses — announce themselves in radio. This is fingerprint matching, not magic: it hears what broadcasts, and only what broadcasts.
The gap A wired camera recording to a memory card emits nothing an app can hear. That's why security reviewers call all-purpose detector apps "security theater" when they're sold as complete protection. They aren't wrong about the overclaiming — the honest framing is narrower: apps cover specific emitting devices, and nothing else.

For a rental or hotel room, the evidence supports a stack, not an app:

1. Look with your eyes

Ten minutes, sightlines first: what faces the bed, the bathroom, the changing area? Smoke detectors, alarm clocks, USB chargers, picture frames at odd angles. Visual inspection outperforms every app in every serious test.

2. Scan the network

A network scanner lists what's connected to the room's Wi-Fi. Unfamiliar devices with camera-maker names — or generic names and open video ports — deserve an explanation from the host.

3. Kill the lights

Dark room, front camera, slow sweep. Bright dots your eyes can't see are IR illuminators. Thirty seconds, occasionally decisive.

4. Then radio

A Bluetooth scan adds the emitting-device layer — trackers and camera glasses especially. It's one layer of four, and any app that presents it as the whole answer is overselling.

Should I pay for an all-in-one detector app?

The lens-glint and "magnetometer" features you'd be paying for are the weakest tested. The useful layers — network scanning, IR spotting — are simple and often free. Pay for focus, not features.

Are dedicated hardware detectors better?

A good RF detector wand outperforms phone apps on hidden transmitters, at the cost of carrying one and learning to read it. For most travelers, the four-step room check above is the honest sweet spot.

Can any app prove I'm not being recorded?

No. Not ours, not anyone's. An app can raise your odds of noticing an emitting device; it cannot certify a room clean. Distrust any product implying otherwise.
